Apple CarPlay to Support ChatGPT and Other AI Chatbots in Upcoming Update

Apple Expands CarPlay with AI Chatbot Integration

Apple is set to expand the capabilities of CarPlay by adding support for voice-based AI chatbot applications, including ChatGPT and other similar platforms, allowing drivers to interact with artificial intelligence while on the road.

According to updates in Apple’s CarPlay Developer Guide, voice-enabled chat applications will be supported once iOS 26.4 rolls out this spring. The new feature is expected to include third-party AI apps such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, enabling users to ask questions verbally while driving. Previously, drivers using CarPlay could only rely on Apple’s built-in voice assistant, Siri, for voice commands.

However, the integration comes with several limitations.

First, developers behind AI apps like ChatGPT and Gemini will need to update their applications to ensure compatibility with CarPlay. Without these updates, the apps will not function within the in-car system.

Second, users will not be able to activate the chatbots using wake words, such as “Hey Siri.” Instead, they will need to manually open the supported app through the CarPlay interface before beginning a voice conversation.

Additionally, the AI chatbots will be restricted to answering questions only. They will not be able to control vehicle functions or perform actions on the connected iPhone. For example, drivers can ask ChatGPT for information or explanations, but they cannot instruct it to adjust car settings or send messages on their behalf.

The AI chatbot integration is part of the broader iOS 26.4 update, which also introduces several other features. These include AI-generated Apple Music playlists, expanded video playback options within the Podcasts app, and end-to-end encryption for Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages.

A beta version of iOS 26.4 is currently available, with the full public release expected in the spring.

While the update brings expanded AI functionality to CarPlay, it remains unclear whether Apple will introduce a more advanced, AI-powered version of Siri in this release.
