Alibaba Launches “Accio Work” as Race for Agentic AI Intensifies

Chinese tech giant Alibaba has introduced a new artificial intelligence tool called Accio Work, a plug-and-play “AI taskforce” designed to help small and medium-sized businesses automate complex operations. The system allows companies to deploy multiple AI agents that can handle tasks such as research, document management, and workflow coordination without requiring coding or technical setup.

The launch comes amid a growing global race to develop agentic AI, a type of artificial intelligence capable of independently completing tasks rather than simply responding to prompts. The trend gained momentum in China following the rise of OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent that has inspired many local companies to create similar tools.

According to Alibaba International Vice President Kuo Zhang, Accio Work is designed specifically for business use, distinguishing it from general AI platforms. He emphasized that high-risk actions—such as financial transactions or access to private files—require explicit user permission to ensure security.

The release follows another recent AI initiative from Alibaba called Wukong, a platform that coordinates multiple AI agents to perform enterprise tasks like document editing, spreadsheet updates, meeting transcription, and research within a single interface.

Alibaba is also restructuring its AI strategy, separating its artificial intelligence businesses from its cloud computing division and creating a new group focused on token-based AI services. The move signals the company’s increasing focus on advanced digital assistants powered by large language models.

While the rapid expansion of agentic AI brings new opportunities for automation and efficiency, Zhang noted that it also introduces risks. Alibaba aims to address these concerns by combining specialized AI systems with human oversight, ensuring businesses can benefit from automation while maintaining security and control.
