Marcos Urges Philippines to Harness AI, Including in Lawmaking

MANILA — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Tuesday emphasized the importance of maximizing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Philippines, including its potential role in crafting legislation.

Speaking in the latest episode of the BBM Podcast, where he was interviewed by three students, Marcos noted that legislation often lags behind technological advancements.

“Legislation is always years behind technology. And the reason is, generally, legislators do not immediately understand technology," he said. "Meron diyan medyo techie na nakakaintindi pero karamihan hindi. (There are a few of them there who are techie, but most are not). So, what will [they] legislate?” he added.

The President stressed that while the country should fully leverage the benefits of AI, users must remain vigilant about its potential misuse.

“What's the best way for the Philippines to take full advantage, to maximize the use of AI. The other side of the equation is: what are the things na kailangan bantayan natin,” Marcos said.

He also reiterated the need to guard against “fake news” and disinformation.

Last month, Marcos revealed that the government is exploring the use of AI to monitor the implementation of flood control projects. The system is designed to track contract processes and flag any irregularities.
