NVIDIA to Acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 Billion in Major Open AI Bet

 



NVIDIA is making one of the biggest moves yet in the global artificial intelligence industry, agreeing to acquire Hugging Face for approximately $12.93 billion.

The deal brings together the world's dominant AI computing company and one of the most important platforms for open-source and open-weight artificial intelligence.

NVIDIA announced the agreement on September 3, saying the acquisition is intended to expand Hugging Face's platform, strengthen its infrastructure, and make AI tools more accessible to developers, researchers, companies, and institutions around the world.

Hugging Face has become something like the GitHub of artificial intelligence.

More than 18 million developers, researchers, and creators use the platform. Its community has shared over three million AI models, 500,000 datasets, and one million applications. More than 200,000 companies are also using Hugging Face to discover, evaluate, customize, and deploy AI systems.

Hugging Face Will Remain Open

One of the biggest questions surrounding the acquisition is whether NVIDIA could eventually turn Hugging Face into a platform centered primarily around NVIDIA technology.

According to NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, that will not happen.

NVIDIA says Hugging Face will continue operating as an open platform where developers can choose their preferred models, AI frameworks, cloud providers, inference services, and computing platforms.

Most importantly, developers will not be required to use NVIDIA hardware to build or deploy AI applications through Hugging Face.

Hugging Face is expected to continue supporting competing accelerators, multiple cloud providers, third-party AI models, and open-weight technologies.

That commitment could be critical.

Hugging Face has become one of the central distribution points for open AI. If access to its ecosystem became tied to a single hardware provider, it could dramatically change how developers build and deploy artificial intelligence.
