Google AI Overviews Now Appear in Nearly Half of US Searches
Google’s AI-generated search summaries are becoming a regular part of how people find information online.
According to Similarweb’s 2026 Generative AI Landscape Report, Google AI Overviews appeared in approximately 43% of searches in the United States, a sharp increase from just 15% a year earlier.
The findings show how traditional keyword-based search is gradually evolving into a more conversational and AI-powered experience.
What Are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are automatically generated summaries displayed above or within traditional Google search results. Instead of presenting only a list of websites, Google uses artificial intelligence to combine information from multiple sources and provide users with a direct response.
Google also offers AI Mode, a conversational search interface designed for longer questions and follow-up prompts. Users can transition from an AI Overview into AI Mode without losing the context of their original search.
According to Google, AI Mode uses a process called query fan-out. This method divides a complex question into several related topics, performs multiple searches, and combines the information into a single answer with supporting links.
AI Mode Usage Continues to Grow
Similarweb estimated that visits to Google’s AI Mode website increased from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million in May 2026.
Google separately announced in May 2026 that AI Mode had exceeded one billion monthly users. However, the two figures cannot be directly compared because Google counts users across its platforms, while Similarweb measures estimated website visits.
The report also found that the average length of Google search queries increased by 5.4% following the introduction of AI Mode.
This suggests that users are beginning to search using full questions and more natural language, similar to the way people communicate with AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity.
Instead of typing short phrases like “best laptop 2026,” users may now ask detailed questions such as:
“What is the best laptop for video editing, AI content creation, and voice recording within my budget?”
This shift allows users to provide more context in a single query and continue asking follow-up questions without starting a new search.
Generative AI Platforms Attract Billions of Visits
Similarweb reported that generative AI websites received an average of 9.5 billion visits per month between June 2025 and May 2026.
This represents a 70% increase compared with the previous year.
Monthly unique visitors rose by 57% to approximately 655 million, while mobile application downloads increased by 58% to 4.4 billion.
The data covers major generative AI platforms, including:
- ChatGPT
- Google Gemini
- Claude
- Perplexity
Despite the rapid growth of standalone AI tools, Similarweb found that most ChatGPT users continue to use Google.
The overlap among audiences using ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude suggests that users are not abandoning traditional search completely. Instead, many people are using several AI and search platforms depending on their specific needs.
Publishers Face Declining Referral Traffic
The expansion of AI-generated answers has raised concerns among publishers, bloggers, and website operators.
When Google displays a complete answer directly in its search results, users may no longer need to visit the original website that produced the information.
This creates a major challenge for publishers that rely on website traffic, advertising revenue, subscriptions, and affiliate links.
Google has responded by improving how original sources are displayed within AI Overviews and AI Mode.
In May 2026, the company introduced:
- More visible direct links
- Article recommendations
- Website previews
- Clearer references to original sources
Google said these changes were designed to help users identify relevant websites more easily. However, the company has not released data showing whether the updates have significantly increased click-through rates to publishers.
AI Citations Do Not Always Lead to Website Visits
Similarweb also examined how often ChatGPT displays web citations.
The percentage of ChatGPT responses containing source references increased from approximately 1.3% in June 2025 to 6.8% in May 2026, based on US desktop activity.
Citation rates were higher for topics such as:
- Travel
- Retail
- Sports
- Product comparisons
- Prices and availability
These categories often require current and frequently updated information.
However, appearing as a cited source does not guarantee that users will visit the website.
Similarweb found that around 65% of URLs cited by ChatGPT were deeper pages within a website, such as articles, product pages, and detailed reports.
In contrast, 58.8% of referral traffic from AI platforms went directly to website homepages.
This means an AI system may use a detailed article as its source, while the link shown to users may direct them to the company’s main homepage.
ChatGPT Search Update Increased Referral Traffic
Following a ChatGPT search interface update on May 7, Similarweb recorded a 157.7% week-over-week increase in referral traffic.
Homepage referrals reportedly increased by 354.7%.
Before the update, approximately 26% to 32% of ChatGPT referral visits went to homepages. After the update, the figure increased to around 60%.
Similarweb observed the increase following the interface change, but it did not confirm that the update was the only reason for the traffic growth.
The data also applies only to ChatGPT referrals and does not measure clicks coming from Google AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Cloudflare Tests Pay per Crawl for AI Companies
As AI companies continue collecting information from websites, Cloudflare is testing a service called Pay per Crawl.
The system allows participating website owners to:
- Permit AI crawlers
- Block AI crawlers
- Charge AI companies for accessing their content
When payment is required, the system can return an HTTP 402 Payment Required response.
Cloudflare can then record the paid request, charge the AI crawler operator, and distribute the payment to the website owner.
Automated payments remain in private beta, but Cloudflare has also made configurable HTTP 402 responses available to paying customers through its AI Crawl Control service.
Website owners can use these responses to provide licensing terms or contact information to AI companies requesting access to their content.
The Future of Search Is Becoming Conversational
The growing use of Google AI Overviews and AI Mode represents a major transformation in how people discover information online.
Search is no longer limited to typing keywords and choosing from a list of blue links.
Users are increasingly expecting AI platforms to understand context, compare sources, summarize information, and provide direct answers.
For publishers, marketers, and businesses, the challenge is no longer simply ranking first on Google.
The new goal is to create credible, structured, original, and useful content that AI systems can understand, cite, and recommend.
For Filipino businesses, media organizations, educators, and content creators, this shift is an important reminder: websites must now be optimized not only for traditional search engine optimization, but also for AI search visibility and generative engine optimization.
As AI-generated answers become more common, the competition for online visibility will increasingly happen inside the answer itself, not only on the search results page.
