Bunkerhill Health Raises $55 Million to Expand Agentic AI Across Hospital Systems
Bunkerhill Health has secured $55 million in Series B funding to expand Carebricks, its agentic AI platform designed to help hospitals deploy clinical and administrative AI agents in real healthcare environments.
The funding round includes continued support from Sequoia Capital, Felicis, Optum Ventures, and Y Combinator, with Khosla Ventures joining the investment.
While funding announcements often focus on valuations and investor names, Bunkerhill Health is addressing a more important question for hospital leaders: Can artificial intelligence operate safely and effectively inside an actual healthcare system?
The company says Carebricks is already moving beyond experimental pilot programs. Its platform is currently being used by Cleveland Clinic, the University of Texas Medical Branch, or UTMB, and Intermountain Health.
From AI Experiments to Real Hospital Operations
Many healthcare organisations have invested in machine learning systems that perform well during research and testing but fail to reach live clinical environments.
Bunkerhill Health says Carebricks was built to bridge that gap.
Instead of offering hospitals a single, fixed AI product, Carebricks allows healthcare institutions to build and manage their own AI agents based on their specific clinical, operational, and administrative needs.
These agents can review medical images, identify patients who may require follow-up care, assist with prior authorisations, maintain patient registries, prioritise referrals, and automate repetitive hospital processes.
The company believes that the next generation of healthcare technology will not simply document what clinicians do. It will help healthcare teams take action on ideas and interventions that staff may not have enough time or manpower to execute.

Addressing Healthcare Costs and Workforce Shortages
The expansion comes as healthcare providers face rising costs and continued staffing shortages.
Healthcare spending in the United States reportedly reached $5.3 trillion in 2024. At the same time, hospitals continue to struggle with shortages of nurses, physicians, specialists, coordinators, and administrative personnel.
Bunkerhill Health positions Carebricks as a platform that can support healthcare workers by automating certain tasks, organising patient information, and identifying cases that may require immediate human attention.
However, the company is not presenting its AI agents as replacements for doctors and nurses. Instead, the platform is designed to help healthcare teams manage large volumes of clinical data and focus their limited resources on patients with the most urgent needs.
UTMB Deploys More Than 20 AI Agents
The University of Texas Medical Branch provides one of the strongest examples of Carebricks being used at scale.
According to Dr. Peter McCaffrey, Chief AI Officer of UTMB, the health system currently operates more than 20 AI agents through the platform. These agents support clinical care, hospital operations, and administrative processes.
One of the agents uses an algorithm cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration to detect coronary artery calcium, which may indicate an increased risk of heart disease.
During its first month of operation, the agent reportedly identified a patient believed to be at imminent risk of a heart attack. After further assessment, the cardiology team confirmed the risk and performed a triple bypass procedure.
UTMB’s care team said the early detection helped save the patient’s life.
However, the case represents one individual outcome rather than evidence from a controlled clinical trial. Bunkerhill Health has not publicly released broader data showing the agent’s false-positive rate or long-term performance across a larger and more diverse patient population.
Faster Specialist Referrals and Patient Follow-Up
UTMB also reported improvements from other AI agents operating through Carebricks.
A nephrology triage agent reportedly helps prioritise patients according to the severity of their condition. Patients requiring urgent care are escalated, while appropriate cases may be directed toward telemedicine services.
According to the health system, this process reduced average specialist waiting times by more than 50 percent.
Another agent monitors lung nodules discovered incidentally during CT scans and helps ensure that patients receive the appropriate follow-up care.
UTMB reported an 80 percent faster response time for urgent cases, twice the rate of guideline-compliant follow-up, and reduced manual work for patient coordinators.
These results come from Bunkerhill Health and UTMB rather than an independent audit. They reflect the operational performance of the platform within one healthcare institution and may not automatically produce the same outcomes in hospitals with different staffing, infrastructure, patient populations, and data systems.
“We’ve already seen tremendous impact on patient care, and we’re only at the beginning of what becomes possible when a health system can operate with agentic AI at this scale,” McCaffrey said.
Khosla Ventures Backs Real-World AI Adoption
Khosla Ventures founder Vinod Khosla said the challenge in healthcare AI has not necessarily been the availability of advanced technology, but the difficulty of integrating it into hospital systems.
“The bottleneck in healthcare AI was never the technology. It was getting a health system to actually run it,” Khosla said.
“Bunkerhill closed that gap. They made it much easier to adopt AI and already have traction inside critical health systems that would take most companies years to earn.”
Bunkerhill Health plans to use the new funding to expand Carebricks into additional clinical and operational areas. The company also intends to strengthen its governance systems, performance monitoring, safety protocols, and safeguards.
Governance and Accountability Remain Critical
The ability of hospitals to create their own AI agents also introduces serious questions about responsibility and oversight.
A department that develops an AI agent for patient triage must determine how the system is configured, monitored, evaluated, and corrected.
Healthcare leaders will need clear policies covering liability, patient consent, data privacy, clinical validation, human supervision, and the process for resolving disagreements between an AI system and a licensed healthcare professional.
Hospitals must also understand how frequently AI agents are reviewed, who is responsible when errors occur, and whether automated recommendations may unintentionally introduce bias or unequal treatment.
The deployment of more than 20 AI agents at UTMB gives Bunkerhill Health a significant real-world reference point. However, the long-term success of the platform will depend not only on how many agents hospitals can deploy, but also on how safely and responsibly those agents are governed.
What This Means for the Philippines
For the Philippines, platforms such as Carebricks show how agentic AI could eventually support hospitals facing shortages of specialists, nurses, administrative staff, and diagnostic resources.
AI agents could potentially assist in patient referrals, medical imaging review, appointment scheduling, disease monitoring, and follow-up coordination, especially in underserved communities and provincial healthcare facilities.
However, Philippine hospitals would need strong data protection measures, local clinical validation, reliable digital infrastructure, and clear government regulations before deploying similar systems at scale.
Artificial intelligence may help hospitals operate more efficiently, but critical medical decisions must remain under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals.
The future of healthcare AI will not be measured only by how intelligent the technology becomes. It will also be measured by how responsibly it protects patients, supports medical workers, and improves access to quality healthcare.
