Ghana Charts AI Future with Landmark National Strategy Focused on Ethics and Innovation
In a decisive step toward shaping its digital future, John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana’s first National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy in Accra, outlining a vision for responsible and inclusive technological growth.
Speaking during the launch, President Mahama emphasized the importance of developing AI systems that reflect Ghanaian values, culture, and societal needs. He stressed that Ghana must not simply adopt foreign technologies but instead build and govern its own AI solutions—ones that understand local languages and address real challenges faced by its people.
The National AI Strategy serves as a comprehensive roadmap aimed at creating a human-centered AI ecosystem. It focuses on strengthening local talent, boosting research and innovation, and encouraging the adoption of AI across key sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and governance. Central to the plan is the establishment of ethical and legal frameworks to ensure that AI development remains responsible and beneficial to all citizens.
A major priority of the strategy is bridging the digital divide, ensuring that underserved communities are not left behind as AI technologies continue to evolve. By promoting digital inclusion, the government hopes to empower more Ghanaians to participate in and benefit from the country’s growing digital economy.
