PNP Warns Public Against AI-Generated Videos Impersonating Police Officers
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has issued a public warning بشأن the spread of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated videos that falsely portray police officers, raising concerns over misinformation and public trust.
In a statement released Tuesday, the PNP emphasized that such videos are designed to appear realistic, making them difficult to distinguish from authentic footage. Authorities noted that these manipulated clips can easily mislead viewers and contribute to the rapid spread of false information online.
“These videos, not only those impersonating police officers but also other misleading content, are created to appear real and can easily spread false information,” the PNP said.
The PNP urged the public to exercise caution when consuming and sharing content on social media. Citizens are encouraged to verify information through official channels before reacting or reposting potentially misleading material.
“We urge the public to verify information from official sources and think twice before sharing. Your cooperation helps protect the integrity of the police and the safety of our communities,” the statement added.
The warning comes after a circulating video—believed to be AI-generated—depicted an unidentified police officer allegedly throwing a tantrum at employees in a fast-food establishment. The clip was flagged by the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG), which shared a snippet as part of a public advisory to raise awareness.
Authorities clarified that the video does not reflect real events and warned that similar content could damage reputations and mislead the public.
Ongoing Monitoring and Possible Charges
The PNP confirmed that its Anti-Cybercrime Group is actively monitoring social media platforms for AI-generated and manipulated content. Officials also stated that legal action will be pursued against individuals responsible for creating and distributing such videos once they are identified.
As AI technology continues to evolve, the PNP reiterated the importance of digital responsibility, stressing that vigilance and critical thinking are essential in combating misinformation in the online space.
