AI’s Impact on Jobs and Skills Takes Center Stage in Webinar

Artificial intelligence continues to reshape how people work, the skills they need, and how governments prepare for change in the Philippines. To explore these developments, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) will hold an online webinar on April 30, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM via Zoom. The event will focus on how AI is transforming labor markets, workforce skills, and public-sector readiness.

The session, organized in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment–Institute for Labor Studies (DOLE-ILS), will feature insights from three research studies examining AI’s influence on employment, skills development, and governance. Experts will discuss both opportunities and challenges brought by rapid AI adoption.

The discussion will begin with a global perspective through the presentation “AI, Skills, and the Future of (No) Work.” The talk analyzes international data, including billions of job postings and trends in AI investments, to understand how automation is changing labor markets. It also highlights who benefits most from AI-driven transformation and its implications for inequality, youth employment, and evolving skill demands.

Following the global outlook, the conversation will shift to the Philippine setting. One study evaluates how prepared local government units (LGUs) are to adopt AI technologies. While AI can improve public service delivery, findings indicate that many LGUs currently show only low to moderate readiness. Challenges include limited digital infrastructure, gaps in technical expertise, and insufficient investment in information and communications technology.

Another presentation will examine how AI is influencing employment across different sectors. The study notes that AI can boost productivity and create new job opportunities, but it may also lead to job displacement and skills mismatches. These developments highlight the importance of policies focused on reskilling, workforce development, and responsible AI use.

Policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders are invited to join the discussion on how the Philippines can maximize AI’s benefits while managing potential risks. Registration is available online, and the webinar will also be livestreamed on the PIDS and SERP-P Facebook pages.
