AI Use Among University Students Nearly Universal, Survey Finds
March 12, 2026 — A new survey shows that the use of Artificial Intelligence among university students is now almost universal. According to research by the Higher Education Policy Institute, 94% of undergraduate students in the United Kingdom reported using AI tools in some way during their studies.
The study found that 95% of students use generative AI for assessed work, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, and assisting with writing assignments. Meanwhile, 12% admitted including AI-generated text directly in their coursework, a noticeable increase from previous years.
Students remain divided on the impact of AI in education. Nearly half said AI improved their learning experience by saving time, while others worry it may reduce critical thinking and make students overly dependent on technology.
Researchers say universities should begin teaching AI literacy and provide clear guidelines on how students can use AI responsibly in academic work.
