THE AI GODFATHER WHO IS WARNING THE WORLD: “JOBS WON’T COME BACK”
Geoffrey Hinton, one of the three “godfathers of AI,” is once again sounding the alarm about the technology he helped create... and this time, the warning hits harder.
In a public talk with Senator Bernie Sanders at Georgetown University, Hinton explained why the coming AI revolution will not be like previous technological shifts. In the past, jobs were lost... but new jobs were created. This time, that might not happen.
According to Hinton:
“The people who lose their jobs won’t have other jobs to go to.”
“If AI gets as smart as humans — or smarter — any job they might do can be done by AI.”
His message is simple: AI might not just change work... it could erase work.
THE MAN WHO HELPED BUILD AI… NOW FEARS IT
Hinton pioneered deep learning and neural networks, now used by today’s leading AI models. He won the 2018 Turing Award alongside Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun. Together, they are known as the “godfathers of AI.”
But today, Hinton warns that:
• AI could cause mass unemployment
• AI companies might profit only by replacing human labor
• The speed of AI transformation is unlike anything in history
He also criticized tech billionaires like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Larry Ellison — saying they haven’t fully realized the danger:
“If the workers don’t get paid, there’s nobody to buy their products.”
A FUTURE WITH NO JOBS… AND NO BUYERS
Hinton said he once believed AGI — Artificial General Intelligence — was still 20 to 50 years away. Now he believes it may arrive in less than 20.
He even claimed that new models like GPT-5 already “know thousands of times more than us.”
Many experts disagree. Knowledge is not understanding. And despite the hype, many AI agent systems meant to replace workers still fail in real-world tasks.
But the bigger issue isn’t technical. It’s economic... and ethical.
THE DARKER THREAT: AI FOR WAR
Hinton also warned about another frontier: AI-powered warfare.
If robots — not soldiers — are deployed overseas, there would be no political backlash from military deaths. That means powerful nations could invade smaller countries with less resistance.
His words:
“It will remove one of the main barriers to rich powerful countries invading little countries.”
WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE COUNTRIES LIKE THE PHILIPPINES?
AI is no longer coming. It is already here. And the world is racing forward.
But the ultimate question remains:
Will nations like the Philippines build AI technology… or will we just consume it while our jobs, skills, and voices slowly fade away?
